Not because Malaysians need to support local theatre, but because it is a good play. 1st to 6th February 2012.

After a string of unimpressive plays, I’ve not gone to a theatre for a long time but was persuaded for this and it paid of. This one was well written overall, and I especially like Kahoe’s first monologue. I like how various angles were touched and covered well.

Secondly, from my observation in Malaysia, whenever history is contested (for school syllabus or outside that), it’s always questioning the facts. Rarely do we look at how history is written, where the words used can affect its understanding and articulation, and lead to a totally distorted view of what took place. This play brought out this thought cleverly.

Well done to Jo, Alfian, the actors and Instant Cafe Theatre. I hope this is not taken out of context nor as a sense of exaggeration, but the play lifted me as well as the standards of Malaysian theatre. The last time I was this captivated, was Rhythm in Bronze’s gamelan show, Alih PungGONG that coincidentally was staged on the exact same location.

Got this via Mark Teh. From what little I see, cool stuff. Wanted to FB Share it, but was too good and had to put it here. Too bad missed the show, but let’s hope to see more stuff like this in Malaysian theatre. Enough with bollocking the politicians. It’s easy content, cliche and exhausted.

Wayang Fajar

I managed to make it in time for the last show of Wayang Fajar, the first part of Wayang Cahaya. What captivated me was the format of the prduction.

Wayang Lampu

I’m not sure how best to put it, but I take it as this is all under Projek Wayang produced by the Five Arts Centre. I have in the past missed Wayang Rakyat, Wayang Buku and Wayang Lampu.

I almost caught Wayang Buku once. I had a slot at Readings @ SekSan in 2008 when promoting the Read while Waiting Project, and had to leave early to speak at Farish Noor’s book launch. Had I not, I would’ve seen how was it that Fahmi and Azmyl had actual coversations with books.

On the whole though, do keep a lookout for works by the Five Arts Centre and that of others where its members are also involved, like PopTeeVee, which were also supportive of the work I’ve been involved in.

I often hear more, know more and go to more of English theatre productions. There’s a production of two Malaysian language plays in one night coming up this week. I imagine it will be quite good. Primarily because of the names involved in Naturalisasi are ones I am familiar with and have impressed me in the past. Fared Ayam, Nam Ron & Zahiril Adzim.
