I’m quite certain I mentioned him somewhere previously in one of my blogposts (after I interviewed him for my Constitutional Law assignment on Article 11 Group in 2006, I think), but can’t locate it. Either way, click here to listen the recent on-air conversation with the human rights lawyer, activist (his blog). I especially liked what was said in the earlier segment of it. http://bfm.my/assets/files/InConversation/2010-12-10_InConversation_MalikImtiazSarwar.mp3

I am now in south Yemen, away from KL for 10 days. Mainly, I am in Tareem, Hadhramawt, a knowledge hub, among other things. Instead of writing of my experience here thus far, I’ll share the quote above that I came across on my first evening here while I was visiting the author of this book.

‘Much of the progress is due to American Muslims who have focused on aspects of their lives that make them human rather than Muslim.’

Today I read article, Terrorist No More, regarding Muslims image/character in the US/Hollywood. I think, the Jewish community at some point did this too and there’s definitely a move to do the same by the feminist, relating to another article I read recently that stated, among many things that, ‘one in five (women) were portrayed (in films) with some exposed skin between the mid-chest and upper thigh regions.’

That article, I feel is a more must read than the one above. Besides discussing not feminism per se but mainly sexism, it also discusses the psychological effects, based on media studies. For example, they’ve noticed that, ‘when one or more women are involved in writing (a film), the number of female characters jump.’ Which gives an indication of how neutral one’s imagination can get. Read that article, The Shame of Family Films, here.

Above is a picture from the film Taqwacores.

Shortly, at 9.30am I’ll be on BERNAMA TV. And last night I did the talk at Bangsar Village* and above are two videos of me speaking at it. Click here to watch videos from other speakers. A few very good points were raised by Marina Mahathir and Sivin Kit. I’m not sure which video it is, but try looking for that video on that youtube channel.

As a member of the audience Niki Cheong asked a very good question/raised a very good point, if there’s any move to educate teachers about child abuse because to him parents and teachers who expect and impose upon their children to get straight As for example, is considered child abuse. He relates this story to his niece/nephew who was crying after receiving her UPSR results, because he/she didn’t receive top grades and the teacher was telling her about how she had told the student to focus on that subject.

Thank you Yeoh Ee Ping for taking the effort to record the session and promptly uploading it. Very much appreciated.

The image is random. A doodle by Talya Goldberg. But do check out Tech4Africa. A web and emerging technology conference, bringing global perspective to the African context. Stuff like this makes me want to quicken my Africa trip in even more. A working trip.

*Came across this via Leila Janah of Samasource (Twitter) whom I’ve been following for a while now. Samasource works to connect women, youth and refugees to life-changing work via the internet. Leila was keynote speak at Tech4Africa.

Watch the video. Not the most likable fellow, but I won’t dismiss good points and brilliant angles for that reason. Watch all the way to the end as he touches various different areas, which I think applies to a number of religions.

.

One: Malaysians who want to see racism disappear r in essence seeking respect.Do maintain tht attitude 2wards foreign workers.Expats & labourers.

Two: If we can wish people around us, Deepavali, Xmas, get well soon, congrats, then I’m confident there are Malaysians who’ll wish Singaporeans happy birthday. If you would appreciate your neighbours wish you Happy Merdeka and what not, then you should do the same. Whatever country their from.

Tree: As an example: 100 trees is still a 100 trees. Given. But its also different in the context of a country with land size like Indonesia vs Singapore. Please argue fairly.

The photo above, is a Christian church in West 4, Manhattan. On the ground floor of that same building, obscurely, is a mosque and Islamic centre, where I had the chance to do Juma’a prayers there just two weeks ago. The same time New Yorkers were debating the issue of the construction.

.

Watch the video (click here to watch extended version) in this post, of the defense against the opposition of the building of the Islamic Mosque and Cultural Centre, and the support for it, by the mayor of New York city, as well as leaders of other religions.

.

I understand that there are some who might be comfortable with either of the two cases above, but keep in mind a few important concepts living and life. Justice. Respect. Society.

I miss creative process. It seems, working as much as I can while travelling (Day 37 of 60) is insufficient. Little is the room for expansion, progress. All the creative outlet that was available thus far, has been exhausted. I don’t miss the comfort of routine and of home, in fact, am quite detached from it at the moment that’s it at most, a subconscious.

August. Soon will be room, again, to making things happen, getting things done.
