PopIN

.

PopIN is really just an information network for young Malaysians to share (primarily) local content that is creative, critical, innovative, embraces diversity and is under-the-radar (fooyoh!).

Last Saturday, for Tali Tenang, Hardesh Singh from PopIN approached RandomAlphabets to offer help. They came in with video support, camera crew and post-production work.

This week I am PopIN’s PopMuda(PM). By that I am committed to write five blog posts for them. I’ve done three so far and you can view them by clicking here.

PM’s also do one twitterview (twitter-interview). Mine 9.30pm tonight. If you have a question, email popin.my@gmail.com or follow @myPopIN on twitter. If you don’t have one

Saturday 9 January 2009.

There’s a gathering at 12 noon.

In front of Maybank Jln Bukit Bintang.

Bring flowers to give away to strangers. Cheap ones expensive ones, doesn’t matter.

Open to anyone and everyone. Facebook event page here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=274950982008

Now’s the time when smiles are needed, if you get what I mean.

Please spread. Tell people you know. Take the link of this blogpost and put it on your Facebook status. Whatever.

More importantly, you, yes you, do come okay? :)

.

*I got the invitation for this by Chi Too, who started the group Main Dengan Rakyat. They organise monthly events in public spaces. I went to their inaugral one called Main Kejar-Kejar Dengan Rakyat. Click here to read about it and see pics.

American Jews

.

I just read this brilliant piece Noam Sheizaf (whom I now follow on twitter, and writes at the blog Promised Land) on American Jews. Got it via ibn Ezra via twitter then their blog. To be fair, I don’t think I read enough on this issue to give a fair comment, but it was an enlightening enough for me.

.

“As I said, this whole approach never seizes to puzzle me. I was always fascinated by American history and culture – to the point of obsession – and I admire the role Jews played in it. But something in the current Jewish politics and ideas regarding Israel don’t fit the long tradition of fighting for civil liberties, freedom and tolerance by this community, both at home and around the world.
.
More than ever, I wonder what role this naïve image of Israel – almost an abstract Israel, which has nothing to do with the actual Middle Eastern country – plays in the way Jews see themselves, and how are they going to look back on it ten or twenty years from now.”

Creative Joy

Merry Christmas

Subtle decor - Joyce, Hong Kong

Sometimes, when your perimetres are limited, you can be as, if not more creative.

Also, that’s one way of telling you lot to stop whining about government regulations and cultural confinements.

Bollywood would have never explored the depiction of romance as remarkably as they did, as quickly as they have developed it, had snogging on screen were permissible.

AirAsia Annual Dinner Party, Back To School theme.

I got this from Zam Nayan (left) via Twitter. He was one of the volunteer videographers for KL Freeze in Unison. Something he does professionally for a living, and decided to help out a bunch of people he never met before for free. Thank you Zam and dD for linking us.

*Kudos to Tony for branching beyond the perimetres of business.

Dawn Format

Wayang Fajar

Wayang Fajar

I managed to make it in time for the last show of Wayang Fajar, the first part of Wayang Cahaya. What captivated me was the format of the prduction.

Wayang Lampu

Wayang Lampu

I’m not sure how best to put it, but I take it as this is all under Projek Wayang produced by the Five Arts Centre. I have in the past missed Wayang Rakyat, Wayang Buku and Wayang Lampu.

Wayang Buku

Wayang Buku

I almost caught Wayang Buku once. I had a slot at Readings @ SekSan in 2008 when promoting the Read while Waiting Project, and had to leave early to speak at Farish Noor’s book launch. Had I not, I would’ve seen how was it that Fahmi and Azmyl had actual coversations with books.

Wayang Rakyat

Wayang Rakyat

On the whole though, do keep a lookout for works by the Five Arts Centre and that of others where its members are also involved, like PopTeeVee, which were also supportive of the work I’ve been involved in.
