Some months ago I posted an extreme sports video (I think) by Redbull, in which I fell in love with the wingman suit base jump. Last night I came across this, speedflying.

Not much to add on this video, except that the reason really why I’m putting it here is to highlight that such a group does exist, probably beyond Madrid. Girls on skateboards. Not just one or two, or a group, but that it’s probably far more widespread than what you see. Oh and to add a new point, on that probably ten years ago, the image girls with/on/near a skateboard was less than rare. And more so in this video, one was in a dress, which I’m sure you’re going to end up seeing more of. Either as a symbolic statement, or as a sexy approach to sell a message (i.e. pin-up/pinup girls).

A nice insight to that last point, check out a FB acquaintance of mine from Israel, Tali Shapiro, who runs a blog on pinup. Culture, politics, art and society, relating to the matter. She also writes for political blog PULSE.

*Thank you Ali Abdul Kader, long boarder from Singapore, for sharing video above.

Brilliant idea I suppose, though somewhat obvious. There are two points I’d raise from this. One from the idea, and the other on the video.

1- Building a plant that could generate a region far from it, would mean heavy reliance on one (or few) sources, which is/can be risky if not damaging, politically, socially and economically, even if sht doesn’t hit the fan. Following that, somewhat flipside to it, the growth of  relations from trade, knowledge and society between the source of the power, to the location it covers.

2- Notice how it’s always the same (background) music used when covering this region of the world? And for some reason, to some extent, music is not even used when footage of say, a different part of the world is being shown. I.e. Europe, northern America. Which says two things, either stereotype, or the target audience of this video. It’s meant to be viewed by people who needs this sound media to hit home to them to appreciate/acknowledge the different/foreign part of the world this video is narrating. I agree that most probably that was not the mindset or conscious perspective of the video producer when making it, but high chance he is at least towing the subconscious line of story telling tradition of the west, and to some extent, the world.

“Two French female students have made a film of the pair of them strolling through the streets of Paris in a niqab, bare legs and mini-shorts as a critique of France’s recently passed law. .. “I love your outfit, is it to do with the new law?” she asks. “Yes, we want to de-dramatise the situation,” one girl replies. “It’s brilliant. Can I take a photo?” asks the policewoman, who will soon be required to fine public niqab wearers. .. “We were not looking to attack or degrade the image of Muslim fundamentalists – each to their own – but rather to question politicians who voted for this law that we consider clearly unconstitutional,” they said.”

Denis MacShane recently wrote an article (read it here) titled the Rise of The Right, which is about the increase of right-wing and extremist politics worldwide, namely in Western and Central Europe. Since there’s a lot of discussion in Malaysia about Perkasa, this is a good read for a more accurate analysis. My personal take  is that, the rise of (far/ultra) rightist, their influence as well as rapid growth, is a worldwide phenomena.

Additionally, it relates to the post-WWII generation, the settling of countries into their own states after the departure of imperial powers that relates to the comfort that identity is both not a national agenda as well as a segmentized one within a nation.

Following that, there is this strong occurrence happening in Europe (as it is the largest region of democracy), due to:

  1. the effect of the European Union taking quite a chunk of sovereign powers of its member states (and now they, the people, want some back), and also
  2. them being rich states, which often means states that accepts refugees (foreigners who are not provided with an society integration plan, hence being marginalized and accused of either stealing jobs of the locals, or criminalizing the locality).

Anyway to conclude back with Perkasa, some must remember that it is neither a peculiar nor exclusive issue in Malaysia, and with that it means that the issue cannot be simply assessed in a nucleus manner.

In late May, I started travelling, marking the longest trip I’ve done thus far. It is now day 65 of 68 and if given the choice, I’d be in either Middle East or Central Africa.

.

I was in Iceland. A place where I enjoy observing the tone of humour, creativity and attitude in the advertisements.

.

Now I am back in London. A place where I’ve been to far too often, losing much of its appeal to me, but foresee more visits.

.

On Saturday, God willing, I’ll be back in Kuala Lumpur. Though I love the place, I have yet to be away from KL long enough to miss it.

.

What I do miss is being in town, as that’s when productivity can soar.Making things happen, getting things done.

This is one of my many favourites. I've been planning to put a print/replica in my home. But during lunch yesterday, my girlfriend said it's no good. Too bad, it's COD and no refund. :)

Have you ever entered a room, so magnificent, your jaw drops with a choking sensation that begins with your mouth and heart, and then goes through your body. You try had to filter hoping that you can manage to handle it, but at the same time you want in as much as you can so as to grasp it all.
