I woke up this morning realising that the blackout curtains in my hotel room, was covering a window and a wonderful view. I had it open immediately and thought, now that’s a nice, waking up the fragrance of green grass. As the wind came into effect, I found myself saying,

hang on now. This new scent is..a different kind of grass!

Not sure how best to say this…but when you travel the world, anywhere on its soil, hence dunia, its good to note, in the same sense as said in prayer, ‘fi dunia wa akhirah’ (this life and eternity)

Last Friday night I was in Hendon, London at a casual dinner for a wedding earlier in the day between an Arab Singaporean Muslim and a British Jew with Iraqi roots. About at least two thirds of the grooms guests were Iraqi Jews, now British for over three to four decades, who all spoke Arabic as their first language.

At about 9pm, I tweeted,

just finished chatting politics with two 60 somthing former Iraqi, now British Jews about how lovely Iraq was, in every aspect, 40 years ago.

One of the things I gathered from speaking to them was that, after the revolution in 1958, the country was going down, gradually towards disarray. Prior, they were not great, but doing as good as they could and that was brilliant.

Later when Saddam Hussein came in power, a man according to them, could run the country and knew how to run things, despite being a man of no good, no principles, no religion, etc.

A large number of jews left because the regime were persecuting them, as well as other Christians and Muslims. He said,

we were living in fear. People would come to houses and ask the a citizen to come with them for thirty minutes to speak about something and that was the last you saw them. And this happened to many people and we knew about it.

Following that, later we went on to speak about the imposition of democracy by external forces. I said that there are a number of countries in the world, either due to fight of independence or the doctrine of self-detemination after World War II, were not in fact ready for, or actually wanted, first independence, and second, democracy.

I explained that in Malaysia some argue that 1969 riots was not a racial issue, but an indication that the people were not (entirely) prepared to govern themselves post independence from the British. An issue of governance, not race. And they shared the view that now after Hussein is gone, everyone is trying to be in power and nothing is getting done.

The Sunni’s have always been in power, deservedly so, despite being the minority. In the ‘social strata’ the Shi’ites of Iraq, mostly in the south, were farmers (as people in that region are) and naturally not better educated as a whole.

And today the Iranians are coming in wanting to see the Shi’ites be in power, but at the same time, the Shi’ites of Iraq are nationalistic and they don’t want this Iranian Shi’ite influence. Sure, they are also Shi’ites, but they are also Iraqis, and they are proud of that.

At this juncture, I must point out that one of the moods I picked up in the chat, especially in the beginning especially in one of them (the man seated on my right as I was on the phone, as above), was of sadness. They also did not refer to themselves as British, or Israeli. But as Iraqi’s despite having left the country years ago.

I suppose to end this post in a lighter note, to share, Arabic is a third language for me. Due to my South American trip in 2008/9, so has Spanish. And since I’m going there again, I’ve been learning and bracing myself habla Espanyol. Problem is, when you are trying to speak a language that shares the same status in your head, it’ll get mixed up.

As I chatted with these two men, whenever I was in agreement with them, because I was trying to accommodate, instead of saying na’am or aiwa (yes, for Arabic), I was going si, si (yes, for Spanish). I know that don’t seem much, but it’s one of those repeated moments where you know you can’t trust your instincts. It is foolish for your own good.

“Hmm. I don’t know what else to show you. So far you don’t seem to be impressed with anything.”

When going places, often it is the basic observation and experiences that strikes me. One example, the simply pragmatic preparation and arrangement of the breakfast I had. Nothing sophisticated or elaborate. Neither draped in history and art, nor science and technology. Just is.

Day 2

26 May

2204

Victoria Coach Station

.

I’ve got a tip to share. Something new I thought of. Managing temperature.

While it is not silly cold here at night in late May London, I must say on some end, the chill does take me by surprise from time to time.

I’m in jeans, t-shirt, flip flops and a soft shell jacket at the Victoria Coach Station, waiting for my 2330 bus to York.

I can manage the chill easily, but that does not stop me from looking for the warmest place possible in this possibly no-heater vicinity.

There are other people, scattered but in groups, cliques, waiting for their buses. After walking across the waiting area, from end to end, I observe it is warmest where there’s more people.

In most instances, I would avoid crowds, but with the objective of comfort cold, it is in the best interest you stay near them.

Day 1

24/25 May

2326 Destination time

Location: Airborne

.

Following the last paragraph from the previous post:

I bring this point forth because a lot of people have expressed interest and intentions of doing trips similar to mine. Put aside destiny, sometimes some people don’t actually, really, want to do it. Some have the mindset that they can’t do it, not possible given their personal circumstance.

My take is that it has more to do with mindset first and then genuine interest, one that is heavy enough to make (sub)conscious measures. If you are shopping more than you are traveling, then your genuine interest is clearly on shopping, greater than that of traveling and not because you can’t afford it.

Observing others doing things that you find attractive, and trying to achieve the same (para materia) for yourself, is not wrong. But because you’re doing it for different reasons, you’ll be surrounded with a different set of circumstances, freedoms and constraints, internally and externally.

Day 1

24/25 May

2240 Destination time

Location: Airborne

*See pics here.

I am on the way to my first destination (London), in what to date is my most extended trip so far, 9 weeks.  25th May – 30th July. During which, the plan thus far, is to spend

  • three weeks in London for a wedding,
  • four weeks in South America for an expedition via the Amazon,
  • two weeks in the USA for the remaining time that I just have.

Three months ago, this was meant to be a nine day trip to London and back. But in late March, at the end of my six month probation tenure at a company, I decided against confirming the employment. Given the flexibility of time of an entrepreneur, a start-up, a self-employed, non-paid individual, nine weeks is as much as I can get whilst working away from my base.

So then it became KL-London-New York City-KL. Then I thought since you’re half-way round, why fly east and go via London again? So it became KL-London-Boston-Maine-New York City-Seattle-San Francisco-Los Angeles-KL. Hence the working name, Around The World June July 2010, ATWJJ10.

But during my USA Visa interview, I was reminded by the officer that I may or may not get a visa, and it may or may not be ready in time before I flew off to London (two weeks after).

The only other place I was itching to go to was Brazil. Very unexpectedly, some days after, I was confirming my participation to be part of a 4×4 road expedition from Buenos Aires to Caracas via Amazon.

After some assessment, it seems that my last two weeks will be in San Francisco, and possibly Los Angeles. Although following the buildup of this trip said it should be NYC, the place I’ve been longing to go since I was last there in June 2006, but my visit to SF in 1997 with the family, called for another with my own.

While yes the decisions derived above were conscious ones, but neither were they clear visions of locations I’ve to tick of my box. It all took place by default, by the itch I had at the moment of consideration, and I just followed through. Nothing complex.
