Furni Loving

Earlier today, I tweeted:

Jst left old furniture shop. In love, did not spend, but hv their email & pics of wht I like. Oh dear..http://lockerz.com/s/159887637

The last time I went on a furniture spree, Jakarta 2009, it caused some damage and no regrets. The same has been the case for the last few outings I’ve had with the shops.

But there are a few realities some must come to face. And the new one I had was, to run away.

By that I mean, not to stay another night in Penang, because if I did, I’d pay this store another visit to confirm purchase of the items I’m interested in.

When I started looking at this, I knew I was getting carried away. So..the wise thing to do was to continue letting that happen.

Aren’t they lovely? Note how the legs are angled, and that there’s only three.

I actually came looking for this. And got excited seeing all the other stuff.

And then I enquired about the price for this gorgeous heavy peranakan beauty. That snapped me back to life and marked my exit.

Khor Antiques, Beach Road, Penang. Near Chulia Street.

That said, here it is for your perusal as I don’t subscribe to this notion of keeping the good things a secret. In essence, no good has ever come out of such selfish behaviour.

Not sure who owns the rights to this image, but too good to not share it here.

Viva Production

I’ll be speaking at this next week on Sunday 12 June, 3.15pm at the Annexe Central Market, alongside Chi Too, Pang Khee Teik, Sharon Chin. I personally like the angle of this talk, because for most of the work (that I assume) you know me for, production can be as huge of a mental turn on, as with ideation.

“Session 4
HUH? LIKE THAT ALSO CALLED PRODUCER?
3:15pm – 5:00pm

Unconventional producers on their work:

  • Chi Too (Main Dengan Rakyat)
  • Zain HD (Random Alphabets/flashmob)
  • Pang Khee Teik (Annexe Gallery)

Chairperson: Sharon Chin (Festival Buka Jalan)

The role of a producer is constantly evolving, with new terms cropping up like Arts Facilitator, Creative Producer, Cultural Producer, etc. This session aims to present the idea of a producer as other from those involved in shows in performing spaces/ theatre stages. These examples include presenters of performance art, installations, mini festivals, flash mob and programming for a venue, and basically anyone who has ever grown tired of waiting for other people to organise anything for them. Now everyone can produce!”

FB event page for this, here. More info on the other sessions, click here.

Got this via Mark Teh. From what little I see, cool stuff. Wanted to FB Share it, but was too good and had to put it here. Too bad missed the show, but let’s hope to see more stuff like this in Malaysian theatre. Enough with bollocking the politicians. It’s easy content, cliche and exhausted.

I thought about this a while ago, especially in the context of religious knowledge and teachings.

It’s not confined to this issue of course, but a parent can’t wonder why the school teacher doesn’t educate their child to say, not pray 5 times a day, if that child did not grow up in a household where he saw his parents doing similar.

Other similar examples are the typical negative act of littering, or on the other end, the positive act of saying hello how are you to a neighbour.

Additionally, I think the public discussion about how we are not a thinking society, or a say, a racist one, can be addressed by simply how adults take lead in their own homes to set examples. Clear examples.

Thanks Vu for sharing this.

Critical Design

Watch this video of an architect exploring design. It would be extremely presumptuous for me to equate myself, and I’m not. but I often get asked by others, why do I get so critical, or why do I spend so much thought into something, with a tone that suggests I shouldn’t. This is why. A lot can be achieved if even just a little more of us gave this a shot.

Will Free Step Go Far?

Just came across this dance, from what I gather seem to be popular in Ibero-Americano countries (Spanish/Portugal speaking countries, colonies).

You can’t have opinions, unless you form opinions.

Came across this earlier from a design book in Bandung. 12 hours later, I’m still fascinated. The picture above is now the wallpaper of my phone. Such beauty.
